7 Incredible Houston Restaurants You Have to Try

Houston is a cultural hub, offering an endless range of unique flavors, exciting restaurants, and all-around delicious food. The tricky thing is figuring out what to pick.

You might get overwhelmed in the face of so many excellent Houston restaurants. We’re going to try and help you narrow down your choice today, giving you a look at some of our top pics for food in Houston. These options should be on your list if you ever visit Houston, take a Texas vacation, or even if you’re a Houston resident yourself.

Let’s take a look.

1. Truth BBQ

It’s no secret that Texas is home to some of the best BBQ in the world, and Truth BBQ lives up to that reputation. They’ve got food all across the barbeque palette, offering a full hog roast, delicious brisket, ribs, boudin, and a whole lot more.

Another thing to appreciate is the fact that this restaurant built itself from the ground up. They started out in an extremely small shop, building their reputation through hard work and sheer talent.

Now, their restaurant has an excellent backyard feel and enough room for you and your family to come to enjoy some seriously good cuisine.

2. Burger Box

Do you have a whole lot of people to feed and not enough time to feed them?  Sometimes, you’re on the road or you’re hosting an event and there’s just no time to go and sit down at a restaurant.

Whether you’re outdoors at a park or planning an event in a conference hall, you’ve got to have a way to feed your guests. Short of catering services or big restaurant bills, there are few ways to do that.

Burger Box fills that gap by delivering excellent, affordable burgers to you. They cater toward larger groups, though. A single box of 10 burgers costs just over $50, and those 100 percent Certified Angus Beef burgers will not disappoint.

3. Daily Gather

Daily Gather is a high-end restaurant with a comfortable feel. This is where you want to go if you’re feeling a little fancy but you don’t have the time or desire to get too dressed up.

The cuisine will provide all the fanciness you need so your wardrobe doesn’t need to do any of the work. Coconut tuna aguachile, oysters, and even soul food like cheesy eggs benedict with bacon are yours for the taking.

You’re in Houston, too, so there’s no shortage of BBQ to choose from. You can expect a wide range of options here, so there’ll be something that everyone in your party can enjoy.

4. Squable

Squable’s tagline is “European Fare with American Influence.” Their presentation is impeccable and the food is creative.

This is a great place to spend date night, grab a cocktail or two, and enjoy reasonably-portioned, expertly-prepared meals. You’ve got options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so there’s always a reason to head over to the Heights area.

They’ve even got creative breakfast drinks that incorporate tiny waffles and wafers as garnishes. That alone should have your mouth watering, but wait until you see the rest of what they have to offer.

5. J-Bar-M Barbecue

J-Bar-M was elected as one of Houston’s best new restaurants last year. It’s the barbecue joint you want to go to if you’re looking for a high-end night out.

Barbecue tends to be hearty, right to the soul, and on the cheaper side of things. J-Bar-M takes that reputation and builds on it, offering one of the more high-end BBQ experiences you’re likely to find anywhere.

Just imagine all of the classic soul food and sides you’d find at an old-fashioned BBQ, except that they’re prepared by the finest chefs in the business. No reinvention of the wheel, just a few improvements to it.

6. Bludron

Bludorn is a creative enterprise that blends all sorts of cuisine into a collage of mouthwatering options. They opened up right as the pandemic hit, but their stuff was good enough to push them through that hardship and build a real reputation for themselves.

There’s a lot of Italian influence in the dishes, so you’ll find everything from pizza to pasta with a few pitstops along the way. Instead of just improving upon the wheel, Bludron reinvented and adjusted it as well.

Expect to be dazzled by these new takes on Italian classics.

7. Maize

No list of Houston restaurants would be complete without an excellent Mexican option. Maize is the culmination of three chefs with more than 70 years of combined experience making high-end Mexican cuisine.

Prepare for ceviches, antojitos, ensaladas y sopa, platos fuertes, insectos,  empanadas, flautas de puerco, and so much more. You might not expect to have amazing seafood in Texas, but close proximity to the gulf to the east offers in-routes that boost the quality of shrimp, oysters, and fish across the board.

Aside from their creative meals, Maize also has a high-end bar with an equal amount of creativity. Their drinks center on the liquor that’s native to the region. Mezcal, tequila, and sotol are heavy in rotation.

Options To Explore Yourself

Note that Houston has a lot of excellent pop-up and food truck options. The city is famously well-equipped with food trucks that will take you by surprise.

You should also be sure to try the pizza in Houston, which takes a different approach than other major cities and provides a unique, southwestern touch to the Italian classic.

We also implore you to explore “hole-in-the-wall” restaurants just as much as you look into the high-end joints in the heart of the city. The quality of the food might be as good or better in a little room than it would be in a dimly lit bar in uptown.

Bon Appetit!
