Other Top Attraction in Bruges

Smedenpoort - Blacksmith's Gate

The first Smedenpoort dates from the period 1297-1299, when the new (or second) ramparts were built. The gate was repaired in 1337-1338 by Jan van Biervliet. The existing gate - built on part of the remains of the original version - was constructed in 1367-1368 by Mathias Saghen and Jan Slabbaert. The gate underwent many changes in the centuries which followed. The upper chamber was replaced in 1615 and in 1909 a passageway for pedestrians was made in the northern tower. On 8 September 1944, the day of the city's liberation at the end of the Second World War, the retreating Germans blew up the bridge across the rampart moat, causing serious damage to the gate. As a result, extensive repairs were carried out in 1948. There is a bronze skull mounted above the left-hand passageway. This is a reminder of the execution of François Vander Straeten at the end of the 17th century. His attempt to allow hostile French troops to enter the city through the Smedenpoort was foiled by loyal citizens and he died on the execution scaffold. His decapitated head was displayed on the gate as a warning to others and was later replaced by a bronze replica.

Station Brugge (Railway Station)

The first railway station of Bruges (1838) was not located on this spot, but at the nearby 't Zand square. Construction of the current station was begun in 1910, but the First World War interrupted the works. The works were not resumed until 1935 and the official inauguration took place on 1 April 1939. The most recent facelift will be completed at the end of 2010. The station of Bruges is one of the 10 busiest railway stations in Belgium.

St. Godelieve's Abbey

Benedictine nuns from Gistel already established themselves here in 1623. A few years later a new, sober brick convent was built. The listed chapel (1626), the entrance building (1633) and the south wing (1634) can still be admired today, together with the ambulatory and the former farm. Inside the chapel the Baroque altar, the pulpit and the carved wooden choir stalls stand out.

Chapel of Our Lady of the Blind

This Baroque chapel was constructed in 1652 on the site where Robert III of Flanders founded the chapel of the hospital for the blind following the Battle of Mons-en-Pévèle (1304). Ever since that battle the guild of Our Lady of the Blind has offered a wax candle in procession to Our Lady of the Potterie each year on 15 Augustus. The remarkable interior includes a Baroque altar, pulpit and rood screen.

't Zand square

't Zand is dominated by the Concertgebouw (concert hall), Bruges' brand-new modern attraction. A clear-cut proof that this World Heritage city isn't afraid of thefuture. The top floor of this culture temple houses Forum+, where contemporary plastic art and a grandiose panoramic view await you. Don't forget to drop inat [Concertgebouw] on the ground floor: here you will find all the necessary tourist information as well as expert advice on all cultural events.
