Tourist favorites in Barcelona
Montserrat, located near the city of Barcelona, is a multi-peaked mountain, part of the Catalan Pre-Coastal Range and Spain's first National Park. Named for the Caribbean island of Montserrat, the mountain, one of the most visited attractions in Barcelona, is well known as the location of the Benedictine abbey called Santa Maria de Montserrat. The mountain's main peaks are Sant Jeroni (1,236 m), MontgrĂłs (1,120 m) and Miranda de les Agulles (903 m). Read more
The Gothic Quarter is the centre of the old city of Barcelona. Despite several changes undergone in the 19th and early 20th century, many of the buildings date from Medieval times, some from as far back as the Roman settlement of Barcelona. The BasĂlica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada FamĂlia, commonly known as the Sagrada FamĂlia, is a large Roman Catholic church, designed by Catalan architect Antoni GaudĂ (1852Ă˘Â€Â“1926). Although incomplete, the church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Though construction of Sagrada FamĂlia had commenced in 1882, GaudĂ became involved in 1883, taking over the project and transforming it with his architectural and engineering styleĂ˘Â€Â”combining Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau forms. Casa BatllĂł is a building restored by Antoni GaudĂ and Josep Maria Jujol, built in 1877 and remodelled in the years 1904-1906. The local name for the building is Casa dels ossos (House of Bones), as it has a visceral, skeletal organic quality. It was originally designed for a middle-class family. The building looks very remarkable Ă˘Â€Â” like everything GaudĂ designed, only identifiable as Modernisme or Art Nouveau in the broadest sense. Read more
Palau de la MĂşsica Catalana
The Palau de la MĂşsica Catalana is a concert hall in Barcelona. Designed in the Catalan modernista style by the architect LluĂs DomĂ¨nech i Montaner, it was built between 1905 and 1908 for the OrfeĂł CatalĂ Â , a choral society founded in 1891 that was a leading force in the Catalan cultural movement that came to be known as the RenaixenĂ§a (Catalan Rebirth).
